Ignorance. Ghastly, blinkered ignorance.
The circumstances of the English settlement of Terra Australis in 1788 are as unique as they are awful. Conceived as a self-contained prison, literally on the other side of the globe from the civilised world, the colony of New South Wales was intended as a place to which all the criminal class of Britain might be banished.
No one seemed to perceive the potential hardships and tragedy that awaited this expedition or the pressure-cooker environment at the journey’s end. But that was only the beginning of the dangers to come, in a land that had seen extraordinary inhabitants, some now long expired, and others only sleeping.
