Medieval scribes liked to fill the margins of their illuminated manuscripts with pictures of strange creatures doing strange things.
The Medieval Margin-agerie Zine (Vol 1) presents fanciful and fantastical content based upon nine of these weird creatures. Each comes with a measure of doubtful background, questionable research material, and stats suitable for most OSR games.
Volume 1 includes. amongst others:
- The Order of the Shell - a group of knights dedicated to the Law of the Great Gastropod
- The vicious Rabbandits - horrible hares and rogue rabbits that raid and pillage without mercy
- The Bipedal Squorsh - light-fingered creatures that communicated through lyrical screeches
- The Brothers Decapitatory - headless zealous duellists who seek out unbelievers for fights to the death
These creatures and artefacts are designed to be compatible with OSR-style games and can be easily tweaked to suit other fantasy or horror roleplaying games.
The Medieval imagination, not unlike the modern, tends towards an obsession with things below the belt. As a result, some of the content of the Margin-agerie is somewhat sexual or scatological. It's more Carry On in nature than anything, but forewarned is forearmed.
