Though the great Caliphate has been dissolved and the unity of Iberia's Muslims lost, their power has not failed entirely. The taifas have their armies, and at the heart of those armies are the noble orders of Muslim Knights. These Knights swear solemn oaths to revere Allah and his Prophet, to fight for the defense of the innocent, and to honor a strict code of ethics and morals in order to bring about peace and justice for their society. They are warriors and poets, and they are the last hope of a people who do not see their doom before them.
Thou Art But A Warrior is a game of tragic stories about Muslim Knights in the time of Islamic-ruled Spain. The civilization that was built there was full of beauty and wonder, art and science, and technological marvels. Alas, it is now a civilization in decline. The unified Caliphate has splintered, and the unwashed Christian armies have declared holy war, determined to re-take the land that was once theirs. When this happens, they will destroy everything they find, like a child smashing a priceless vase.
You play Muslim Knights, sworn to protect that which cannot possibly be saved. The stories you will tell are of noble men wrestling against tragic fate, trying to save the land they love as everything falls apart around them.
Thou Art But A Warrior expands on the Polaris system by Ben Lehman. It is a system that focuses heavily on narrative story-telling through the use of negotiation and key phrases to advance conflict. Formerly published as a separate expansion, the new edition contains the expansion rules as well as the base Polaris system rules and some additional writing by Ben Lehman. It also has a beautiful new layout done by Evil Hat's Fred Hicks as well as all new interior illustrations.
